SAR Dog Tag Eclipse Signal System

Friday, February 11th, 2011

OK….anyone that knows me will tell you I’m a gear nut and always looking at ways to reduce weight of my kit and maximize effectiveness.

I recently picked up a couple of the  SAR Dog Tag Eclipse Signal System and this fits the bill. After all the whole purpose of survival is being found and this item offers that in a lightweight system that literally fits in the palm of your hands. I am very impressed with the simplicity and multiple uses of this item and it will without a doubt be part of my EDC.

Fire Starters and Buddy Burners

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Here’s a recent project involving some old tuna cans, cardboard, string, some “Strike Anywhere” matches, an old coffee can and wax (either new or partial candles or even old crayons).

In addition to the old tried and true cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly, here are some other methods that you can have on hand in your camping/hunting/prep kits.

Fire starters:

Very simple, these can be used when your tender is limited or even damp. These are nothing more than strips of cardboard wrapped and tied in string and then dipped in wax. Store these in an old coffee can or another container that you can store or even take with you on your next camping trip…might want to add some of these in your B.O.B. or G.H.B. as well.

Reynolds cooking bags in your survival kit.

Friday, October 8th, 2010

That’s right….the bag that your mom put the chicken and all the veggies in can be added to your kit and will hold much more water, is much more durable and get this….you can even utilize the bag to treat your water all for the same space in your kit.

I heard about this method years ago and decided to see if it works…and I’m sold. I carry at least 2 of these bags in my survival ‘tin’. You can use one for water collection and/or storage and the other to pasteurize your water.

Survival Basics

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

We all watch the ‘survival shows’ that are on the TV these days and many people may have said to themselves “there’s no way I could do that” or some may have even said…”sure that’s easy”. Here’s a breakdown for the ‘naysayers’ out there and bare bare bones basic skills needed to stay alive and been found:

 Learn to make a fire.

Always have at least THREE methods of starting a fire with you, one can be used immediately like waterproof matches or a butane lighter. You can add flint and steel and I would suggest picking up a Magnesium Fire Starter/Bar as well, you shave the magnesium off so you will always have some ‘dry’ fire starting material. These can be picked up at a local camping or discount store.
