Many of you have probably noticed the recent remodeling/changes made in major retail stores by increasing and rearranging floor space to maximize sale floor space. However, one thing we are not seeing is the reduced storage space in back. Granted, at least here locally, several chains have built new distribution centers and they have been operating for a few years now.
I have read and heard the phrase “we are 6 meals away from starving”, this I think is two-fold. One, most families have maybe 2-5 day’s worth of groceries on hand and secondly as I stated, many stores rely on distribution centers for quick stock replenishment.

Many people will tell you, at least with the anonymity of the internet, that they keep their preparedness efforts secret, even from friends and family members.
Some may say this is a ‘guilty pleasure’ or ‘dirty little secret’ that they don’t want their family thinking they’ve gone off the deep end. But look at it this way, would you want your neighbors to know that you have month’s worth of fresh water, food and fuel stored up? All this 2 days after a disaster hits and FEMA is still trying to find you on a map! Or worse yet….FEMA is preoccupied saving themselves.

Times are tough….no doubt. But that is no reason why you still cannot prepare for emergencies. By simply looking at what you have available around the house, you can start to develop and build 72-hour Emergency Kits and storing items that you will need during those ‘lean times’. With as little as $10-20 per week and a weekend a month you can begin to develop and sharpen skills.
Here’s some general rules to follow:
